See What’s Inspiring Us Right Now
Silver, purple, undercuts, mohawk braids, you probably wouldn’t know by looking at these words that they describe some of the top hair trends of 2015.
They also happen to be some of the most popular celebrity hairstyles from this year, with celebrities like Rihanna, David Beckham, Beyonce, and Jared Leto leading the pack in terms of having some of the most sought after hairstyles and hair colors researched and copied over the past year.
And this makes sense, most of the time when we’re thinking of trying a new cut or color, we look to celebrities to see what they’ve done or what they’re doing, and try to emulate their style. It’s how a trend catches on, and goes from being a one-off picture you see of a celebrity on the internet to the expansive spread in a magazine with the title, “Every Guy in Hollywood Has a Man Bun.”
With 2016 only a couple of days away, we’ve gathered a list of what we saw and heard this year, whether it was on Pinterest, in a magazine, from a trusted online resource, or from hairstylists themselves, to show you what we’re excited about right now, and the styles and colors we think will still be popular leading into the new year.
First up, the popular hollywood hairstyles we saw on the leading ladies.
Hairstyle Inspiration for the Ladies
You may be familiar with some of these hairstyles and colors, since you most likely saw them on many female celebrities throughout this past year.
Braids
While braids are not a new trend, we did see them making quite a comeback this year, with two braid styles in particular getting a lot of recognition and notice, mainly because of celebrities embracing their natural hair.
Box Braids
We saw box braids on everyone from Zoë Kravitz to Tia Mowry to Keri Hilson this year. It’s a beautiful hairstyle that is not only low maintenance, but will also help protect the hair, for instance from extreme weather conditions. The important part is to decide what type of braid you want, a thick box braid will require you to have more hair, whereas a smaller box braid would be ideal for thinner hair. While the actual hairstyle is low maintenance like we said, actually getting the hairstyle done is not. It can take anywhere from four to eight hours to complete the process, so make sure it’s what you want before you sit down in the stylist’s chair.
Goddess Braids
Another popular type of braid, goddess braids look like large, more pronounced cornrows that lie on top of the scalp. The braid is usually styled around the crown of the head with a part that angles toward the back. Celebrities like Ciara, Jada Pinkett Smith, Chanel Iman, and Gabrielle Union have all worn this elegant hairstyle recently. One reason we think it’s popular right now is because it can be easily styled, yet it’s still classic and fashionable. Look for it on the red carpet in 2016.
Color
There have been so many hair color trends this year that it’s been hard to keep up with celebrities ever-changing style, but these two colors in particular have everyone talking.
Silver Hair
For as long as we can remember, it used to be that women, (and men) would color their hair to cover up any grey hair, but the past couple of years have proven that grey hair is actually a fashion statement. While not everyone can pull this sort of hair color off, the hue has been trending high for awhile now on Pinterest and Instagram, with a lot of us wondering how we can achieve this celebrity hairstyle.
Purple Hair
Purple hair may seem like a hard hair color to achieve, but it’s surprising how many celebrities and trendsetters have decided to try this color. Stars like Kelly Osbourne, Katy Perry, Nicole Richie, (she’s a chameleon when it comes to hair color!) Hilary Duff, and Britney Spears have all dyed their hair a shade of purple, and they’ve all made the color look good! The “rainbow hair trend” has become increasingly popular this year, and it doesn’t look like celebrities are going to stop anytime soon.
Hot Hairstyles for the Gents
These Hollywood gentlemen have been setting the hair trends, while everyone else has been taking note.
Man Bun
Even though the man bun may seem “so last year” to many of us, it is actually one of the most searched terms on Google right now. Even if men can’t achieve it, they still want to know what it is and who’s doing it. And women just want to see the celebrity men who can rock it. With hashtags like #manbunmonday created, we bet this celebrity hairstyle might take a while to fade out.
Comb Over
While the man bun is a fairly new hairstyle, the comb over is a classic hairstyle that has stood the test of time. The great thing about this look is that it can be done slightly different each time, so men can give the hairstyle it’s own unique feel. Sometimes hair is razor thin on the sides, big with lots of volume up top, or slicked back for a smoother look, either way, the same classic comb over hairstyle can be seen underneath. Look for celebrities like Justin Timberlake, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo to continue to sport this clean look.
Now that you’ve seen some of the celebrities that have made these hair trends big, it’s time to read more about the hair trends themselves, and what’s going to continue trending in 2016.
The Most Popular Hairstyle Trends of 2015
You may have already guessed, but the top hair trends of 2015 that were searched over and over were men’s hair, braids, and color, (specifically purple and grey).
As we mentioned, the man bun and the comb over were some of the most popular men’s hairstyles to try this year, but there were also some other surprising hairstyle trends that men were willing to experiment with.
The flat top haircut and pompadour fade for instance, were two rising hairstyles this year that are rooted in old school design, but have a modern twist to them.
Other trending hairstyles for men included the mohawk fade and the samurai hairstyle.
For women, braids and offbeat hair color continued to rank high on their list of most sought-after hairstyles.
Dutch braids, halo braids, side braids, and even french braids, no matter what type of braid it was, it was being searched for this year. Since you can play around with size, length, thickness, and shape, it’s hard to imagine someone getting tired of trying out this trend. As more and more women come up with different ways to experiment with this hairstyle, we imagine the trend only getting bigger in the new year.
As we mentioned above, varying degrees of purple and silver have become the new hair colors to try. This is most likely because women are becoming more playful with their color choices, and aren’t afraid to try out a more daring option. As more and more celebrities try out “rainbow” colors, they’re encouraging their fans and the people that follow them to do the same, and that’s how a trend is born.
While all of these hairstyles are still trending upward, here’s your last look at some hairstyles from 2015 that won’t be making it big in 2016…
Hairstyles Fading Out
Don’t get caught with these hairstyles in the new year! Here’s your look at some of the styles that have been declining in popularity recently…
While once an easy hairstyle to manage, the sock bun is unfortunately fading away in terms of most searched hairstyles to try. It may be because “messy hair” has risen in popularity in recent years, and an uptight hairstyle like the sock bun doesn’t fit with the trends.
Other hairstyles fading out include french twist, half updos, and plopping hair.
French twist and half updos are more seasonal hair trends, as they tend to be most popular around wedding season, and so it makes sense that these hairstyles are slowly on the decline right now.
French Twist
Plopping hair used to be the thing to do for curls, but over the years women have found new ways to curl hair, and so this style has been trending downwards in favor of new trends.
