5 Must-Read Survival Tips for Black Friday

From us to you – read on to learn 5 crucial tips that will get you through what has become the busiest shopping week of the year.

What exactly is Black Friday?

Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving, and most often marks the official beginning of the Christmas shopping season (cue the excitement). What that means is, almost every large retail chain will open its doors at the crack of dawn for customers who want the best deals. It’s a day built around coupons, deals, promotions, and sales, and it’s been recorded as the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005.

Depending on the retailer, Black Friday sales can start in the wee hours of the morning, or sometimes even the night before, and most end on the last day of the month. This is of course, so retailers can advertise yet another promotion period, albeit for only one day: Cyber Monday.

Tips, Tricks, and Testimonials: How To Survive Black Friday

If you’re thinking you can casually get out of bed and stroll into any store on a day like Black Friday, you will likely be left in the dust of those who camped out overnight to get that big screen TV for $10. Whether you like the thrill, want the best deals, or simply want to see what all the fuss is about, you need a strategy. We are here to offer 5 important tips for planning your Black Friday shopping trip.

Tip 1: Do Your Research
Only interested in electronics? Beauty aisle calling your name? Maybe you’re only focusing on one specific store. The point is that you should narrow your focus and concentrate on exactly what you need. Doing your research ahead of time will save you the headache of feeling lost while you’re out shopping. It will also allow you the time to look up the different promotions associated with the store or items that you want to buy before you arrive. BlackFriday.com is a helpful site that may help shorten your research time.

Tip 2: Get To Know the Promotions
Once you’ve done your research, the next step is figuring out how you are going to accomplish all of your shopping in the given time period. For example, some retailers offer their promotions the day before Black Friday, while some may give bonus coupons or rewards for getting to the store early. Knowing when your promotion starts and ends will help map out your day and set realistic goals you can meet. Remember, be strategic!

Tip 3: Bring a Friend
This one is simple enough. Black Friday is a chaotic day, and sometimes it’s a little easier when you have a friend by your side. Not only can they help control your stress level, they can also assist in checking items off your shopping list. Two is always better than one, and we know you’ll thank us later when you’re reminiscing with a fellow Black Friday survivor about the day over coffee, lunch, or a drink!

Tip 4: Know Your Limits
Even the most prepared people will have a hard time spending what they had planned to spend on Black Friday. All the discounts, rewards, and free gifts can end up driving someone into debt and far beyond the holiday gifts he or she set out to buy. The most important thing you can do is set a budget for yourself. By this time you’ll already know the prices for everything you want to buy, so the next step is to create a list of who you’re buying presents for, and stick to that budget. If you’re someone who likes to overspend, one trick might be to only bring cash out with you, or only use a debit card for your Black Friday purchases. Doing this will help you honor the limits you set for yourself, because you won’t be able to spend more than you have, even if you have the urge to.

Tip 5: Read the Fineprint
Before you checkout, remember this last step. Black Friday has a ton of great sales, but if for some reason you need to return a product, make sure you read the fine print. Sometimes stores will discount a product so much they won’t even allow returns on it, or they will only allow returns within a certain number of days (sometimes even hours!). Making sure you’re aware of these policies ensures you don’t end up feeling cheated once you get home from a full day of shopping mayhem.
